The 2022 Mazda CX-5: A compact yet spacious SUV

Skyactiv and i-Activ, technologies at the heart of driving pleasure

Mazda vehicles are often described as a lot of fun to drive. At the heart of this are two key technologies: i-Activ all-wheel drive and the Skyactiv engine.

First, Mazda’s all-wheel-drive system doesn’t just send power to all four wheels. It’s a technology that uses sensors that check road factors 200 times per second for even faster reaction.

These sensors also decode your intentions and respond by sending torque to the right wheels for optimal control. This system is now standard on the entry-level Mazda CX-5 GX.

Moreover, the all-wheel-drive system is made of lightweight materials to reduce the weight of the car. This results in increased agility of the SUV and, as Benoit Charette mentions in L’Annuel de l’automobile:

“Of all the compact SUVs that are available at a realistic selling price, the CX-5 is the most interesting to drive. You get a sense of agility behind the wheel. It’s responsive and fun to drive.”

Next, Skyactiv technology refers to the design of the powertrains, thought to be one with the car. The Mazda CX-5 is equipped with a 2.5 L Skyactiv-G 4-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque.

The Signature model adds power with a turbocharged engine that produces 256 horsepower and a generous 320 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with a 6-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission with a manual mode.

Advanced technologies

In terms of infotainment, there’s now a standard 10.25-inch touchscreen display, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility as well as a text-messaging feature.

The Mazda CX-5 GS adds conveniences like two USB ports in the rear. Higher trim levels, from the Mazda CX-5 GT, an integrated navigation system is added, as well as a 10-speaker Bose audio system and several other advanced options.

The Kodo design is always there

Mazda’s vehicles are instantly recognizable, with their sporty, flowing Kodo design that’s been described a hundred times. For 2022, the CX-5 gets some minor tweaks to its headlights and grille, which are a little more distinct.
